Gorakhpur is a religious  city near the border with Nepal, in the eastern part of the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. It is the administrative headquarters of Gorakhpur District and of baba goraksh nath. The city named after the medieval saint Gorakshanath. Gorakhnath Temple is said to stand on the spot where Gorakshanath practised Hatha Yoga to develop self-control. This place home to  Buddhist, Hindu, Jain and Sikh saints, historic Buddhist sites and the Gita Press, a publisher of Hindu religious texts. It is also the Birth place of the great saint Paramhans Yoganand. This city is also a business centre, hosting the headquarters of the North Eastern Railways ,prevoiusly known as Bengal Nagpur Railways. Gorakhpur located on the banks of rivers Rapti and Rohini was earlier known as Ramgram and used to be the capital of the Koliyas.

Geography : The geographical area of Gorakhpur included the modern districts of Basti, Deoria, Azamgarh. It covered total  Area 3483.8 sq. km with population of 3,769,456 .

Attractions :

Gorakhnath Temple: This temple dedicated to saint Gorakhnath whose name the city takes after. The Gorakhpur Gorakhnath Temple epitomizes the identity of the city. It is standing on the 52 acres area of the land. It is exactly located in the heart of the city on Gorakhpur-Sonauli state highway. The most attractive feature of this temple is the garbh griha where sage Gorakhnath is portrayed as a manifestation of Lord Shiva in deep meditation posture.


Arogya Mandir: Gorakhpur Arogya Mandir was developed in the year 1940 by Dr. Vithal Das Modi born in Gorakhpur on 25th April 1912 . Arogya Mandir in Gorakhpur is one of the very famous and reputed wellness centers in Gorakhpur. In this health center ,body and mind related ailments are removed by natural curative methods and yoga. This wellness center induces a natural healing process in the body which gives boost to self-curative forces and enable in healing and acquiring health.

Gita Press : It is located at a distance of 4 kms from the Gorakhpur rail station was founded in the year of 1923 by Divine inspiration to spread the teachings of Gita. It was inaugurated on April 29th, 1955 by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Gita press is world famous for its publications, which include religious books of Hindu religion. It is beautifully designed like a temple, the marble walls are dacorated with the pictures from the Mahabharata, Wall hangings and paintings which reveal the life of lord Rama, Lord Krishna and vast collection of hindu religious books.

Commerce Museum: The Commerce Museum was developed in the year 1969. It was established under the patronage of the University of Commerce. Commerce Museum, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh is entirely dedicated to the upliftment of education in Gorakhpur. It is one of the most popular Museums in Gorakhpur.

By Air: Gorakhpur airport, which is 8kms from the citycentre, is connected by air with Delhi, Varanasi, Lucknow and Kolkata.

By Road: Gorakhpur lies on the National highway, which connects it to the cities of Uttar Pradesh and other major Indian cities.
