Shillong

Shillong –It is the capital of the smallest indian state,  meghalaya.  It is a hill town in the north eastern part of India. It stands at a height of 1496 m. Shillong remained the capital of assam till the creation of meghalaya in 1973. since than it has been serving as meghalayas administrative capital. Shillong has beautiful lakes and waterfalls, and is set in plush green mountains and pine forests. It is a very popular hill station which was also known as the Scotland of the east. It is because its temperature is much less than that of tropical India. Adequate facilities, scenic beauty, cheerful people, clouds and tall pines, mountains, valleys, meadows and an excellent golf course make Shillong a great destination to visit.

Geography – Shillong is mostly surrounded by various lakes and waterfalls. It is situated on a single piece of plateau. The city lies in the center of the plateau and is surrounded by hills. Its Latitude is 25.42N; and its Longitude is 88.24E .



Tourism There are various tourist attractions in shillong, some are listed below:

Cherrapunjee (Sohra)- It is situated 56 kms from shillong. A pleasant drive to see roaring water falls leaping into deep gorges. This is the wettest place on the earth and receives the highest mm of rainfall. It rains every day in cherrapunjee.

Umiam Lake- Umiam Lake is 17 km from Shillong. It offers various water sport facilities consisting of sailing, water skiing, and fishing.

Golf Course – It is one of the oldest golf courses in India. Shillong golf course is one of the best and the largest golf courses in India.

Shillong peak – It is an extravagant picnic spot just 10 kms from the city which offers a panoramic view of the country side. It is also the highest point in the state at 1965 meters above sea level.


How to reach Shillong

By Air: Guwahati's Borjhar Airport is the nearest international airport which is located at a distance of 128 kilometers from Shillong.

By Rail: Shillong has good network of railways. Guwahati at a distance of 103 kilometers from Shillong.

By Road: The State Transport buses offer good services to the various places in Meghalaya and the neighboring states from Shillong. The bus stand is located in the heart of Shillong.
