Pune also known as Punya Nagari is the second largest city in the state of Maharashtra in western India. The great Maratha leader Shivaji grew up in the city and made Pune the capital of the Maratha Empire established in the 17th century. After Shivaji’s death, power of Pune passed to the Peshwa as professional administrators. Under the Peshwas, Pune acquired great political importance and became well known as a centre of learning and culture.

Pune is the administrative capital of Pune district and the eighth most populous metropolitan area in India. Pune is also known as Queen of Deccan and Oxford of the East. Pune is center of Marathi Theater, education, crafts, culture and art. Pune includes interesting spots like the exquisite Aga Khan's palace, the marvelous Pataleshwar Cave Temple, to the avian sanctuary of Pashan Lake, the fun filled Splash Mountain Water Park, or the captivating Museum of Arthropod. Pune is known for its educational facilities, having more than a hundred educational institutes and nine universities.

Geography: Pune is located 560m above sea level on the western margin of the Deccan plateau and around 160 kolometer southeast of the state capital. It is situated near the Sahyadri mountain range , which separate it from the Arabian sea. It is a relatively hilly city, with its tallest hill, Vetal Hill, rising to 800m above sea level.

Tourism: Pune offers a lot to culture and music buffs, food and fashion lovers. It is one of the historical, romantic and charming cities of the world surrounded with green hills and amazing tourist points. Some major attractions in this city are :

Agakhan's Palace

This is a famous landmark in Pune city. Agakhan Palace is known for its architectural excellence spreading on 19-acre land. It is the place where Mahatma Gandhi, Karturba Gandhi and Mahadeobhai Desai were imprisoned during the "Quit India Movement" in 1942. Marble memorials were put later on in the memory of Kasturba and Mahadeobahi, both of them breathed their last in this place. The beauty of the palace captivates the eye of every onlooker; with its magnificent structure. Mahatma Gandhi's items like his bed, writing desk, Kasturba's saree and other clothes; his slippers are maintained properly at their place.

Lal Mahal

Lal Mahal was constructed by Sahaji Bhonsale, Shivaji's father in 1643 A.D. During Bijapur Sultanat, he sent his wife, Jijabai, and his son to the city and got the palace built as their residence. In 1998, Lal Mahal came under the management of Pune Municipal Corporation.
Lal Mahal has an impressive collection of Shivaji,Guru Dadoji Konddev and Jijabai's pictorial representations, The other major attractions of the Lal Mahal of Pune include four Umbrellas on its terrace and a statue of Jijabai. There is also a beautiful garden inside the palace complex, known as Jijamata Garden. Now the garden has been converted into a children's garden and is very popular amongst kids as well as senior citizens.

Shaniwarwada

Shaniwar Wada is a royal residence built by the second Peshwa, Bajirao-I Shaniwar Wada in 18th century. Construction of Shaniwar Wada began on 10th of January 1730 and used to be the head quarter of the Peshwas. Shaniwar Wada today is left with only an imposing outer wall. It is visible that the ruins can translate the glory of the Maratha power. The doors of the palace are so strong that it had been designed to dissuade huge enemy attacks. This is an expansive palace with its impressive fountains, music shows and gardens.

 How to reach Pune

By Air: Pune airport is situated in the Lohagaon area, approximately 10 km to the northeast of the city. There are direct flights connecting Pune with the major cities of India, like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, etc.There are direct flights connecting Pune with Mumbai.

By Rail: Traveling to Pune by trains is a very good option. A good rail network connects Pune with rest of the parts of the country. Trains like Shatabdi Express, Deccan Queen, Indrayani Express, etc, ply regularly between Pune and Mumbai.

By Road: Pune is well linked with almost all the major cities of Maharashtra as well as the rest of the country by road. There are regular bus services connecting Pune with Mumbai, Nasik, etc.Excellent road network connects Mumbai and Pune. State-run as well as private buses operate on a frequent basis between the two cities.
