Nāgpur is the largest city in central India and the second capital of the state of Maharashtra. The present city was founded in the early 18th century by Bhakt Buland, a Gond prince of the kingdom of Deogad in the Chhindwara district. The name Nagpur built from ‘Nag River’, which is a tributary of the Kanhan River. ‘Nag’ is the Marathi word which means cobra. The river flows through the old city of Nagpur and so the city derived its name from this river, 'Nag'+'pur'. "Pur" is common suffix given to cities, villages and towns across India.

 It is headquarter of Nagpur district and Nagpur division. Nagpur population is 2,420,000. It ranks as 143rd largest urban area in world in terms of population. Nagpur is one of the major industrial cities of Maharashtra. This district is famous for its orange productions. In Nagpur offers the cool environment of Gavilgad Fort, which is 200-300 years old. Lonar Lake is the third largest natural salt-water lake in the world. Marbat and Ramjanam rath yatra are the local festivals

Geography: Nagpur has a mean altitude of 310 meters above sea level. The adjoining districts are Bhandara on the east, Chandrapur on the south, Amravati and Wardha on the west and in the north shares the boundary with Madhya Pradesh.

Balaji Mandir: Balaji Mandir is situated amidst the tranquil and awesome environs of the Seminary Hill. The temple is dedicated to Shri Balaji, who is its presiding deity. Balaji Mandir also enshrines the idols of Lord Kartikeya, regarded as the Commander of the Army of Gods. One of the reasons for the popularity of the Balaji Mandir at Nagpur is the picturesque surrounding of this religious place.




Ramtek: Ramtek is a popular tourist spots of Nagpur as well as Maharastra .The significance of the place is Lord Rama Passed this way during his period of banish and hence the name. Ramtek has a wide number of 600-years-old picturesque temples.

Pench National Park: Pench National park is located 65kms away from Nagpur; it is an interesting wild life destination. This is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Nagpur.

Markanda:
Markanda, a small local church located on the left bank of Vainganga River, is famous as a religious past. The land gets its name from Sage Markandeya. The cluster has an approximate 24 temples.

By Road: Since the city is located almost at the heart of Indian landscape, an extensive network of roads link Nagpur to various cities in Maharashtra and all over India. Many important tourist destinations like Aurangabad (504kms), Khajuraho (546kms), Bhopal (352kms), Kanha (266) are connected to Nagpur by road.
