Mumbai formerly called Bombay, is the capital of Maharashtra and also the financial capital of India, with an estimated population of thirteen million. The name "Mumbai" is derived from Mumba or Maha-Amba – the name of the Hindu goddess Mumbadevi – and Aai, "mother" in Marathi.

After independence, the state of Bombay was split into two states Maharashtra and Gujarat on linguistic basis in 1960, while the former retaining Bombay city as its capital .It is the second most populous city of the world. The metropolitan city is the commercial and entertainment centre of India. The city also houses India's Hindi film and television industry, known as Bollywood. Mumbai is a centre of interest for glamorous happening, films and music. This is the place of beaches like Marina beach and Juhu beach. Tourist spots like Gateway of India, Essel World, Mani Bhawan, Jehangir Art Gallery, Siddhivinayak Temple and Bollywood film industry are also there to see. Mumbai also offers lots of adventurous and romantic activities through its nightclubs, pubs, theatres, beaches and restaurants.

Geography : Geographycally Mumbai lies at the Ulhas River off the western coast of India, in the coastal region known as the Konkan. It sits on Salsette Island. Much of the city lies just above sea level. The city spans a total area of 603 km².

Tourism: Mumbai has lots of sites, which can give a breathing rest and enjoyment. The beach belts are the perfect family sites in Mumbai where one can enjoy the crowd as well as the cool breeze of the sea. There are pubs and restaurants, which open up to late nights. Famous tourist spots here are :

Gateway of India : The Gateway of India was built to commemorate the visit of the King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai in 1911AD.It was designed by George Wittet and built in the Indo-saracenic style.It is a monument ,located on the waterfront in South Mumbai. The Gateway is a basalt arch 26 metres high. The Gateway is built from yellow basalt and reinforced concrete and foundations were completed in 1920. The central dome is 15 metres in diameter and 26 metres above ground at its highest point. The cost of the construction is about Rupees 21, 0000 which was given by the government.

Juhu Beach : Juhu is one of the most popular and fizzing beaches of India. It is surrounded by Arabian Sea in the west, Santacruz and Vile Parle in the east. Juhu is around 30 kilometers north of the city centre. It is one of the more affluent areas of Mumbai. The available games at juhu beach are horse and donkey riding, dancing monkeys, acrobats, cricket matches, toy sellers etc. available.



Haji Ali Dargah: The Dargah was built in 1631 by a Muslim merchant and saint named Haji Ali. Haji Ali died on his way to Mecca and his body, in its casket, floated back to Mumbai. The Haji Ali Dargah is a mosque and dargah located on an islet off the coast of Worli in Mumbai. Lying as it does in the heart of the city, the dargah is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Mumbai.The whitewashed structure occupies an area of 4,500 metres and 85 feet. The tomb within the mosque is covered by a red and green chaddar .It is supported by an exquisite silver frame. The main hall has marble pillars embellished with coloured mirror work: blue, green, yellow chips. The ninety-nine names of Allah are also written on the pillars.

Siddhivinayak Temple: The temple has a Kalash, which is a pointed dome of 12 feet high Gabhara weighing 1500 kg and plated in gold. So, it facilitates the 'Darshan' of Sri Siddhivinayak from either the area surrounding the Gabhara or the stage constructed to conduct pujas and festivities. Vinayak is considered to be one of the Ashta Vinayak shrines of Maharashtra, celebrating eight instances of legends related to Ganesha.

Jain Temple: The Jain temple is dedicated to Adinath the first Tirthankara. Temple built in white marble and decorated with paintings which depict the incidents of the life of Tirthankaras. The first floor of the temple is particularly dedicated to Parasnath. His image is covered with black marble.






Film City: Mumbai Film City is also sometimes called Bollywood.The Film City is located away from the city life, on a secluded piece of land in the vicinity of Aarey Colony near National park. The Film City offers large studios for indoor shootings, recording room, a theater, and facilities like garden, lakes, ground for fighting scenes, helipads etc. for outdoor shooting. The plan for this Film City was prepared and executed under the able guidance of late V. Shantaram, the veteran actor, director and film producer. Film City is not open to the public, but with prior permission and through known people you can easily go on a trip here.

Local Trains: Local Trains are the major source of transport in Mumbai. This network of Railways has three lines, namely the Western Line, the Central Main Line and the Harbour Line. Mumbai is totally covered by local train network. The area from Churchgate to Virar is covered under the Western line via Western Suburbs, while the Central Main Line starts from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and travels to Kalyan through the Central Suburbs and Thane. All the local trains start operations usually after 04:00 hours in the morning and close maximum by 01:00 hours. Traveling in second class is definitely very cheap, but it is exceptionally crowded.

Marine Drive: Marine drive is another important tourist attraction in Mumbai. Marine drive runs along a long stretch of 3 kilometers and has shape like an “inverted C form”. Marine drive links the Nariman Point to Malabar hill. This stretch is often looks like as the Queen’s Necklace when it is lit by the street lamps at night.





Prince of Wales Museum: The Prince of Wales Museum is another famous place of tourist interest in Mumbai. This museum was built in the 20th century to commemorate the visit of Prince of Wales. The structure was designed by George Wittet, who is also reputed as the designer of the prestigious Gateway of India. This museum houses for a good collection of ancient Indus Valley artifacts dating back to 2000 BC, plus some priceless Tibetan and Nepali Art. There is an entire gallery devoted to Buddhist Tankha scrolls and another to Tibetan bronzes, but the chief attraction here is the collection of over 2000 miniature paintings from the various art schools of India.

How to reach Mumbai

By Air: All major airlines fly to and from Mumbai to most of the important cities of the world. The international terminal of Mumbai is known as Sahar and the domestic terminal is known as Santa Cruz. The Sahar terminal is 30 km from downtown Mumbai and Santa Cruz is at a distance of 25kms.

By Rail: Central Railways runs services to the east and north, the Western Railways also runs trains to North India from Churchgate and Central stations.

By Road: If you would like to travel by bus within India, most long distance buses leave from the State Transport Terminal located opposite Mumbai's Central Railway Station. However, this is not a good option if you do not speak Hindi or Marathi as no printed information is available in English. However most of the neighbouring states like Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh have their state bus company offices located here.
