Indore is the largest historic and the commercial capital of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is situated on the Malwa Plateau and south of the Satpura Range. The name Indore originated from the Indreshwar temple constructed in 1741 by local landowners. The ancestors of the founders of Indore were hereditary Zamindars and indigenous landholders of Malwa. In Mughal times, the founders of these families received titles such as singh and Chaudhari, which established their claim to the land. Indore is the administrative headquarters of the Indore District and the Indore Division. They had been rewarded the region around modern Indore by the Peshwas, the Maratha rulers after Shivaji. A large number of industries have developed in and around the city, which has been known as a major textile hub in this part of the country.

Geography : Indore is located in the western region of Madhya Pradesh, and is close to the centre of India. Indore has an average elevation of 553 metres. It is located on an elevated plain, with the Sahyadri mountain range to the south.
