Mangalore, the district head-quarters of Dakshina Kannada is one of the famous cities of the state. A city of multiple cultures, Mangalore is a seaside town on the Konkan coast, and a very important port city of the state of Karnataka.
This city got its name from the Goddess Mangaladevi. However, there are many references to this city by names that are slightly different. For instance it was also known as 'Managalapuram' in 715 AD by a Pandya King, while in the 11th century an Arabian traveler called it 'Manjarur'. Today, its latest name is 'Mangaluru', renamed by the Karnataka Government.
The city of Mangalore is a scenic and beautifull city enclosed with coconut palms, hills and streams and is known for its temples and beaches.
Tourism

The Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatheshwara Temple, 3kms from the city, is a major landmark. You could also visit Kadri Sri Manjunatha Temple, located on the highest foothill and shows the history of 1086 AD. It houses what is said to be India's best bronze statue of the God Lokeshwara. While there, visit the stone caves on top of the hill called the Caves of the Pandavas.
The Mangaladevi Temple found its name after the princess in whose memory the city also got its name. Atop the lighthouse hill is St. Aloysius Chapel, established between the 18th and 19th centuries and see the beautiful paintings that adorn the walls of the church. Keep some time to visit the Kudroli Mosque as well.
Boloor, 6 kms away from the city, where you will find the Sultan Battery, established by Tipu Sultan and made of black stone. While it may look like a fort it was really a watchtower.
New Mangalore Port, which is 10kms from the city, is said to feature ninth on the list of the biggest ports in India.
Finally, chill out at the beaches of Ullal, Taneerbhavi and Panambur

By Air:
Mangalore airport is located at 20 km from the city center and is well connected by air to the major cities of state.
By Rail: Mangalore has its own railway station which are located at 5 km from Mangalore.
By Road: Mangalore has good connectivity with all cities of the state. National Highways 48 and 17 connect Mangalore to other major towns in the country.
