Vaishno Devi |Gulmarg |Sonmarg |Srinagar |Leh Ladakh

Vaishno DeviVaishno-Devi is situated in the Trikuta Mountains of lower Himalayas at an altitude of 5300 feet in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The shrine is approachable on foot along a 13 kms trek from Katra town at the foot of the hills. The shrine is located in the place where the goddess abandoned her human form for her communion with the holy trinity. The 100 feet long sacred cave is placed at a distance of 13 kilometers from the base camp, which is situated in Katra. Katra is connected through roads to the city of Udhampur, which is 35 kilometers away from the shrine and Jammu situated at a distance of 50 kilometers.

Vaishno Devi, is mother goddess worshiped here in the forms of Maha Kali, Maha Saraswathi and Maha Lakshmi. It assumes that three aspects of creation, preservation and destruction which is a part of the divine power is represented in the temple of Sri Mata Vaishno Deviji in the form of the three pindies of the Goddess Maha Saraswati, Maha Lakshmi and Goddess Maha Kali. It is used to pray to Lord Rama and had taken vow of celibacy.  The theory behind is that one day Demon-God Bhairon Nath saw the Goddess Vaishno and chase her to kill. During this she felt thirsty at Banganga (1kms from Katra) and shot an arrow into the earth from where water gushed out. 'Charan Paduka', marked by the imprints of her feet, is the place where she rested. On her way she then meditated in the cave at Ardhkanwari (6kms) now a temple. Bhairon Nath took nine months to locate her. Vaishno Devi assumed the form of Maha Kali and cut off Bhairon Nath's head, which fell at the place where the Bhairon Temple is now located. Vaishno Devi journeyed up to the mountains and took the present cave shrine as her home. The boulder at the mouth of the holy cave, according to the legend, is the petrified torso of Bhairon Nath who was granted divine forgiveness by the benevolent Mata in his dying moments. The offerings for the goddess include coconut, mauli (sacred thread), red scarf with gold/silver trimmings, dry fruits, bangles, and incense and vermilion powder. Other offerings include ‘mehndi' (henna), ‘supari' (areca nut) and ‘chattar' etc.

Many more legends have also appeared about the discovery of the shrine by Pandit Shridhar who was a dedicated devotee of the goddess. The goddess appeared in the dreams of the pandit and showed him the route to the cave situated in the lap of the Shivalik Ranges. Since its discovery 700 years ago, the shrine has become the holiest of pilgrims of the Hindu devotees. A stream of the holy River Ganga moistens the lotus feet of the goddess. Thousands of Pilgrims from all over the world visit the holy shrine throughout the year except in winter. All pilgrims are required to get passes at Katra for the yatra (pilgrimage) from Tourism Reception Centre, Katra Bus Stand. Facilities for food, water and public utility are available all along the trek. Overnight accommodation available in route at Sanji Chhat and also at the shrine. Pony or Palanquin services are available for those who find it difficult to climb the trek. The cave shrine is narrow and pilgrims have to walk through a running stream of cold water Charan Ganga to get to the sanctum sanctorum.
